Guryeva Anastasia (SPbSU, Russia) General Trends of Traditional Elements Usage in Contemporary South Korean Poetry 1 Keywords: South Korean Poetry, Traditional Elements, Symbols, Metaphors The issue of relations in between pre-modern and contemporary Korean literature 2 (roughly speaking—literature before and after the beginning of the 20 th century) does not belong to popular research topics. Conventionally two literatures are usually perceived as two completely different phenomena: they represent absolutely different traditions, bothwere formed in different backgrounds and on the base of different prerequisites, they are influenced by different factors. It is a common place to view contemporary literature separately without consideration of possible borrowings and connections. It is undoubtable, that the above differences resulted in the development of two literatures: the protagonists and themes are generally different, forms and modes were mostly borrowed from the West. At the same time, it would be wrong to say that the new forms are independent from traditional. A more careful consideration of texts belonging to contemporary literature discovers multiple and complex relations with literary tradition of previous periods, i.e. with pre-modern literature. It is important to note, that the authors may use traditional elements intentionally as a mode, but there are as many cases when these elements arise from the author’s subconsciousness, asso- ciations formed during lifetime, culturally conditioned specifics of weltanschauung. 1 This work was supported by the Core University Program for Korean Studies through the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Studies Promotion Service of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS-2016-OLU-2250002). 2 There are two commonly used terms standing for Korean literature: modern and contemporary literature, the former standing for the first half of the 20 th century, and the latter — literature of the second half of the 20 th literature or literature after 1945. At the same time, both terms can determine the literature after pre-modern period.
