Knorozova Ekaterina (SPbSU, Russia) Spirit of Rock in Traditional Vietnamese Literature The cult of rock in Southeast Asia was investigated by Ya. V. Chesnov, G. G. Stratanovich, L. Kadier. Perhaps the name of the widely known Vietnamese Fudong spirit can be explained by referring to the Thai language, where the combination of pù đống means “stone mountain”. There is a story about the rivalry of two spirits — the Lord of the earth and the Lord of the Stone. The spirit of the rock was Kao Luo, who served An Ziong-vyongu (III century BC) and made for him a wonderful crossbow. Subsequently, the spirit of the rock was replaced by the Golden Turtle or the Taoist deity, the Lord of the North Heaven. The daughter of An Ziong-wong My Tiau is connected with the stone. The tradition that unites the tree, stone and female deity is included in the “Description of the amazing land located to the south of the mountains” (Lin to us chit kuai, XV century.), This is the “History of Man-nyong.” The connection between stone and tree can be seen in the image of the goddess Thien-i A-na, close to the goddess Tyam Po Nagar. Martynov, a rock for Chinese people is a sort of a symbol of heavenly energy, some cluster of matter, a certain state which can be achieved only under influence of cosmic forces 1 . Among Chinese mythological characters associated with a rock, we can name Yu; so, as one of the legends tells, he was born by the rock.
