Vol. 1. 2018 219 North Korean authorities utilize various tools for improving country’s public administration, including national fiction literature. A 2015 novel Shine Bright You, Dawn by Lim Bong Chol discloses some ways of constructing of images of model statesmen who have lived and worked during recent decades. In respect to that, the case of Yon Hyong Muk (1931–2005), a former prime minister of the DPRK and former party head of Jagang province, provides a good example. Yon plays a decisive role in the novel. Lim portrays him as a hard-working person who normally paves a way for other people to overcome difficulties in various situations. Yon pushes the protagonist called Lee Jong to remodel itself and the industrial workers to enhance their zeal. The character is unwaveringly loyal to North Korean leaders, and he enjoys their trust and respect in reverse, especially from Kim Jong Il who values Yon both officially and personally. The latter reiterates at every proper time that workers and cadres must follow Kim Jong Il’s instructions. Yon communicates with his subordinates and colleagues in a strict manner, demanding from everyone to act according to his or her duty and to provide no exceptional rights for cadres, regardless of their position. The regional party secretary conceals his actual state of health as he is intended to fulfill tasks outlined by Pyongyang first. Lim Bong Chol creates a pattern of a responsible cadre worker who devotes all his or her life to meeting demands of the top leadership.
